Arkansas and Arkansas State will meet for the first time on the gridiron Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. The Razorbacks remain the flagship program in the state, but there are a few areas they must address to avoid a slip-up against the Red Wolves.
1. Secondary Must Slow Down Arkansas State’s Passing Attack
In its opener against Southeast Missouri State, Arkansas State’s quarterback threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns while completing 26 of 32 passes. Four Red Wolves receivers finished with more than 45 yards, showing a balanced and dangerous passing game.
The Hogs had early issues defending the pass in its season opener against Alabama A&M, allowing 130 yards through the air in the first half before settling down after the break. The Razorbacks cannot afford a slow start against a more talented opponent like Arkansas State. The secondary will need to be disciplined in coverage and disruptive at the catch point to keep the Red Wolves in check.
2. The Hogs Must Win the Turnover Battle
The Razorbacks played a clean offensive game in their opener, avoiding turnovers against Alabama A&M. That was a welcome sign after last year’s struggles, when giveaways cost the Hogs in several critical situations. Against Arkansas State, ball security must remain a priority.
The Red Wolves forced a fumble in their opener against SEMO but also gave one away. Arkansas must emphasize taking care of the ball throughout the week and look for chances to create takeaways on defense. Winning the turnover margin would give the Razorbacks a major edge.
3. Arkansas’ Defensive Line Must Step Up
While the defense settled in after a sluggish start last week, the Razorbacks generated little consistent pressure. Arkansas managed just two sacks against Alabama A&M, with only one coming from the defensive line. Games are often decided in the trenches, and the Hogs need to control the line of scrimmage to take over this matchup.
Arkansas State’s offensive line held firm against SEMO, not surrendering a sack and allowing only four tackles for loss. If the Razorbacks can disrupt that protection, they should be able to dictate the game.
In a historic first-ever matchup, and potentially the last game for the Razorbacks in War Memorial Stadium, Arkansas is the heavy favorite. A sharper defense and clean offensive performance should be enough to secure a win.
