Arkansas Stuns No. 4 Tennessee in Fayetteville

Arkansas (4-2, 2-1 SEC) defeated No. 4 Tennessee (4-1, 1-1 SEC) 19-14 in Fayetteville, Ark. This marked the Razorbacks’ first Top 5 win in Razorback Stadium since 1999.

The Hogs held off the Volunteers second half comeback for their second SEC win of the season. Arkansas took the lead late in the fourth quarter after backup quarterback Malachi Singleton scored a 13-yard rushing touchdown.

Game Summary

Arkansas opened the game with a 20-yard field goal by kicker Kyle Ramsey, and the Razorback defense held the Vols scoreless in the first half. The Hogs went into halftime up 3-0. Tennessee came out in the second half and scored touchdowns on their first two drives, both of which were scored by Vols running back Dylan Sampson. After falling behind 14-3, Arkansas cut into the Tennessee lead after running back Ja’Quinden Jackson scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 4:38 left in the third quarter, making it 14-10. On the ensuing drive for the Razorbacks, backup kicker Matthew Shipley made a 23-yard field goal to cut the Tennessee lead to 14-13.

Arkansas starting quarterback Taylen Green took a hit in the fourth quarter and was taken out of the game with roughly 10 minutes left. Backup quarterback Malachi Singleton led the Hogs offense for the remainder of the game. After a quick three-and-out from Tennessee, Arkansas got the football back with 3 minutes left in the game. The Hogs drove 59 yards in four plays, ending with Singleton’s go-ahead touchdown with 1:17 left in the fourth. Arkansas failed the two-point conversion, giving Tennessee time to drive down and potentially take the lead. Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava led the Vols down to the Arkansas 20-yard line, but on the last play of the game, the Hogs defense held strong and forced Iamaleava out of bounds.

The Razorback defense will give this team the opportunities to win games down the stretch. Tennessee averaged 565.8 offensive yards a game and 290 rushing yards per game. The Hogs held the Vols to only 332 offensive yards and only 174 of which were rushing yards. Arkansas will head into the bye week on a high note and will start preparing for No. 13 LSU (4-1, 1-0 SEC) in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 19.
