The Diamond Hogs dropped their first game of the College World Series, falling 4-1 to LSU on Saturday night. The two SEC rivals entered the tournament as the top two betting favorites to win the national championship, but the Tigers got the best of the Hogs in Omaha. Now, Arkansas must battle through the elimination bracket and cannot afford another loss if they hope to reach the finals.
Game Summary
Arkansas dropped its College World Series opener to LSU despite a stellar relief outing by Gabe Gaeckle. The sophomore right-hander struck out a career-high 10 batters over a career-long six innings, allowing just one run on three hits after entering the game with the bases loaded in the second inning. LSU had already built a 3-0 lead before Gaeckle’s entrance, and Razorback starter Zach Root was tagged with the loss.
The Hogs’ only run came in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Reese Robinett, his third of the season. Arkansas finished the night with just four hits, singles by Wehiwa Aloy, Cam Kozeal and Charles Davalan, and was unable to capitalize despite putting a runner in scoring position in the eighth. LSU ace Kade Anderson limited the Razorbacks to one run across seven innings while striking out seven.
Who Stood Out for the Hogs
Gaeckle did everything he could to keep Arkansas in the game, throwing 90 pitches and racking up 10 strikeouts in six dominant innings of relief. But the early damage proved too much to overcome.
Offensively, the Hogs struggled to generate momentum. Robinett provided the lone highlight with his sixth-inning homer.
Looking Ahead for the Hogs
Arkansas will now face Murray State in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Monday, June 16, on ESPN. A loss would end the Razorbacks’ season, while a win would keep their championship hopes alive.
