Arkansas’ lone returning position coach on the offensive side of the ball is making the most of the opportunity to work under new coordinator Bobby Petrino.
Tight ends coach Morgan Turner left his post at Stanford to join the Razorbacks prior to last season and has gone from Dan Enos to Kenny Guiton to Petrino in just over a year on the job.
While Turner stopped short of giving away trade secrets during his Thursday interview with local media following Arkansas’ second practice of fall camp, he was quick to offer high praise for Petrino’s system and how it utilizes his position group.
“I don’t want to get into how it tweaked or changed, but right now it’s really fun because we are doing a ton and we’re learning a lot of different things,” Turner said. “This what they are doing at the next level, and the guys love it. They get excited about that.
“From checks and shifts and motions and then making calls and helping us get in the right plays. They are excited about it, and they are embracing it.”
Turner spent one year as quarterbacks coach at Indiana State before spending the next dozen at Stanford prior to making the trek at Fayetteville, and he has used the last several months to soak up information from Petrino like a sponge.
“It’s been really fun listening to him talk about why we are running this play, how it affects the defense, what the defense is doing to stop our run game and what answers we have there. It’s been neat to see,” Turner said.
“I haven’t been in a ton of different offenses, but it’s been good to see what he’s brought in from all over the place. It fits into his offense, and it’s been really good.”
