Arkansas secondary coach Nick Perry met with the media during fall camp to provide an early update on the development of the Razorbacks’ defensive backs. Perry expressed optimism about the group’s energy, focus and potential but also pointed to areas that still need improvement as the team works through camp.
Experience and Versatility
Coach Perry expressed optimism about the Razorbacks’ secondary, pointing to both returning experience and new additions made through the portal. He mentioned plenty of names of new and older guys in the program making an impact for the Hogs’ defense.
With position battles still ongoing, Perry stated the number of guys with versatile skill sets allows the coaches to put the pieces together to find who works best where.
“We’ve got some guys who can play multiple spots,” Perry said. “That gives us options when we go to different packages. It’s about finding the best combination to get us off the field.”
Length and size were a big point that Perry mentioned about this year’s group. Having a bigger secondary causes more problems for opposing quarterbacks. They will have the ability to change passing lanes by being able to reach out and affect the pass.

Mindset for Fall Camp
Perry spoke highly of the secondary’s mindset throughout the spring, summer and now the fall. The players have been locked in, looking to better themselves and want to be coached up.
“We’ve got a group that’s locked in right now,” Perry said. “They’re asking the right questions, they’re studying the tape, and they’re not afraid of being coached hard. That tells me they’re hungry.”
Competition and confidence are key for the secondary, especially playing in one of the toughest conferences in the country. As a defensive back, eventually a play won’t go their way, and Perry wants his guys to be able to bounce back and respond to adversity.
“You’re going to get beat sometimes, that’s part of the position,” Perry said. “But it’s how you respond. We’re trying to build guys who have short memories and long belief in themselves.”
Looking Ahead
As fall camp rolls on, the mindset Perry is instilling in his defensive backs could prove to be just as important as their physical tools. With a renewed focus on competition, toughness and consistency, Arkansas’ secondary is aiming to become one of the most reliable units on the field. If the group continues to embrace that identity, they’ll have a chance to make a real impact when the season kicks off.
“We’re not where we want to be yet,” Perry said, “but I like where we’re heading.”
