Sam Pittman Recaps Fall Camp Day 1

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman recapped fall camp day 1 with a confident tone, praising the team’s effort and focus during their first practice. The early morning practice set the tone for what Pittman hopes will be a disciplined, high-effort camp that builds the foundation for the season.

Fall Camp Day 1 Standouts

Pittman said several wide receivers caught his attention. He spoke highly once again of freshman Antonio Jordan and mentioned Andy Jean and Jalen Brown as well.

“Antonio Jordan made some really good catches,” Pittman said. “He’s hard to cover because he’s so tall and he can run. You look at him and think he’s just a big target, but showed today he can run. He was good in one-on-ones when they played man coverage on him. We have some guys that can run. Andy Jean did a nice job, and Jaylen Brown can run as well.”

Pittman noted the turnovers in practice and that multiple defenders made plays, including interceptions. One name that stood out on the defensive side was Julian Neal.

“It’s one day,” Pittman said, “but I’ve also seen them through the summer. I think our secondary is much improved.”

Veteran transfer Mike Washington Jr. took reps with the starters at running back during the first practice. Pittman explained why Washington got that opportunity.

“We expect a lot of him (Mike Washington) because we saw a lot of good things out of him in the spring,” Pittman said. “So he’s earned the right to be where he’s at on the depth chart.”

Improvements Needed

Pittman was pleased with the toughness, effort, and conditioning of the team on Day 1. Although the practice went well, he pointed out one consistent issue, handling the snap count. He said it wasn’t widespread, but a few small miscues can be costly in close SEC games.

Offensively, Pittman said the team needs to protect the football better, noting that some of the turnovers were tipped passes that turned into interceptions. Turnovers were a recurring issue last season, so ball security remains a key focus throughout fall camp.

“The very first thing we do out of stretch is ball security,” Pittman said. “We need to emphasize it. I don’t know how to do it any more than do it the first thing of practice.”

Looking Ahead

With fall camp officially underway, the Razorbacks have a long road ahead to finalize the depth chart, clean up execution, and build team chemistry. If Day 1 was any indication, the coaching staff is encouraged by the team’s early effort and competitiveness. As Pittman and the Hogs continue to build toward the season opener, attention to detail and consistent growth will be essential.
